About Hong Kong Time

Hong Kong Time (HKT) is eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time and is the time zone used by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China. HKT shares the same UTC+8 offset as China Standard Time and Singapore Time, placing Hong Kong in the same time as Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, and Singapore. This alignment is important for Hong Kong's role as one of Asia's preeminent financial centers.

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) is one of the largest in the world by market capitalization, and its operating hours on HKT are a key factor in global trading schedules. Hong Kong's position at the crossroads of East and Southeast Asian commerce, combined with its common law legal system inherited from British colonial rule, has made it a preferred hub for international business in the region. The city's time zone facilitates same-day communication with both Asian and European markets.

Hong Kong does not observe daylight saving time. The territory used DST during various periods in the 20th century, most recently from 1946 to 1979, but it was abolished due to public preference and the relatively modest variation in daylight hours at Hong Kong's subtropical latitude of 22 degrees north.
