About Singapore Time

Singapore Time (SGT) is eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time and is the time zone used by the Republic of Singapore. Although Singapore is geographically located at approximately 104 degrees east longitude, which would place it naturally in the UTC+7 zone, the country adopted UTC+8 in 1982 to align with its major trading partners, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and China.

Singapore is one of the world's most important financial centers, and SGT's alignment with China Standard Time and Hong Kong Time creates a unified trading zone across East and Southeast Asia's major markets. The Singapore Exchange (SGX) operates on SGT, and the city-state's role as a global hub for banking, shipping, and technology makes its time zone commercially significant far beyond its small geographic size.

Singapore does not observe daylight saving time. Located just one degree north of the equator, Singapore experiences almost exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness year-round, making DST entirely unnecessary. The country's adoption of UTC+8 despite its geographic position means that solar noon occurs at approximately 1:05 PM local time, and sunrise and sunset are correspondingly later than they would be under a geographically accurate time zone.
