About Western Indonesian Time

Western Indonesian Time (WIB, from the Indonesian Waktu Indonesia Barat) is seven hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time and covers the western portion of Indonesia, including the islands of Sumatra, Java, and western and central Kalimantan (Borneo). Jakarta, the national capital and largest city in Southeast Asia by metropolitan population, operates on WIB. The zone shares the same UTC+7 offset as Indochina Time.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country and spans three time zones: WIB (UTC+7), WITA (Central Indonesian Time, UTC+8), and WIT (Eastern Indonesian Time, UTC+9). WIB covers the most economically significant and densely populated part of the archipelago. Java alone, which is entirely within the WIB zone, is home to over 150 million people and accounts for more than half of Indonesia's GDP.

Western Indonesian Time does not observe daylight saving time. Indonesia's position straddling the equator means that daylight hours remain nearly constant throughout the year, making seasonal clock adjustments unnecessary. In 2022, the Indonesian government considered reducing the country's three time zones to two to simplify business operations, but this proposal remained under discussion.
